Ever feel like everyone else knows their decorating style—and you’re just out here guessing?
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why can’t I figure out what I like?”—you’re in the right place.
Today I’m going to walk you through exactly how to find your decorating style—without a quiz, without a mood board, and without getting stuck in another scroll spiral.
And I’ll be honest with you… even as an interior designer, I had to do this exercise in my own home.
After having a baby, moving into a new house, and trying to decorate in the middle of working and barely sleeping, I realized something:
I was totally confused by my own style.
I knew what looked good—but nothing felt like me.
That’s when I decided to slow down and figure it out for real. And you can too—in just 15 minutes.

Step 1: How to Find Your Decorating Style by Imagining Your Perfect Day at Home
Grab a notebook, or open your notes app. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
Now, picture this:
It’s your ideal Saturday at home. You’re not rushing, you’re not cleaning, you’re just living in your space and enjoying it.
Ask yourself:
- What does the room look like?
- What’s the lighting like?
- What are you wearing, holding, or doing?
- Who’s with you?
- How do you want the room to feel?
Write everything down. Go with your gut. Your answers are a sneak peek into what matters to you in a home—and that’s the secret to finding your decorating style.

Step 2: Make a List of What You Love (This Will Help You Find Your Decorating Style Fast)
Now that you’ve tapped into your ideal day, it’s time to spot the patterns.
List the decorating things you’re always drawn to—online, in magazines, even in friends’ homes.
Think about:
- Favorite furniture shapes
- Go-to color palettes
- Textures you can’t resist
- Decor you keep saving on Pinterest
Your list might look like this:
- Earthy tones and wood accents
- Soft lighting and cozy throws
- Antique pieces with some character
- Handmade or vintage art
These are the building blocks of your decorating style. They don’t have to fit a label—just fit you.
Step 3: Name What You Don’t Like to Narrow Down Your Decorating Style
This part’s just as important. If you’re not sure how to find your decorating style, start by getting clear on what’s not it.
Make a list of anything that doesn’t sit right with you:
- Cold gray walls?
- Matchy-matchy everything?
- Super modern and sleek?
You don’t have to justify it—just trust your gut. Knowing what to avoid makes shopping (and saying no to trends) so much easier.
Why This Works (And Why It Helped Me Find My Decorating Style)
This exercise helped me slow down and tune into what really felt good in my space.
Not what was trending. Not what other designers were doing. What I wanted in my home as a mom, a woman, and a human who just wanted to exhale at the end of the day.
How to find your decorating style isn’t about picking a label.
It’s about creating a space that makes you feel at home in your own life.
